Can I drink water after running?

Some people say that we cannot drink water after running. Drinking water at this time may cause some abnormal harm to our body. At first, people don’t think so, but after hearing such words too many times, people will inevitably think about it. Therefore, whether we can drink water after running has become a question in the minds of many runners, because running is a very intense sport. If you don’t pay attention when running, many people will get injured. So, can you drink water after running?

Don’t drink water immediately after running:

1. Generally speaking, if the amount of exercise is not too much, you can replenish water immediately, or drink about 100 ml at a time after 5 minutes. Wait at least 10 minutes between each session. It is not advisable to replenish water immediately after strenuous exercise. You can only gargle or swallow no more than 50 ml of water. You should do rest exercises (such as slow walking after a long-distance run) to get the body out of the exercise state. When the carotid pulse rate recovers to below 120 beats/minute (you can press the carotid artery to measure it yourself), you can replenish water. It is still advisable to replenish 100 ml at a time, with at least 10 minutes between each two times.

2. Drinking a lot of water after strenuous exercise will reduce the salt content in the blood, making it easy to have muscle cramps, and even various diseases such as headaches and vomiting. Moreover, if you drink too much water at one time, your gastrointestinal tract will feel uncomfortable and bloated. If you lie down to rest, the diaphragm will be squeezed, affecting your cardiopulmonary activity. Therefore, after strenuous exercise, no matter how thirsty you are, you should not drink too much water at one time. You should drink water in small amounts multiple times.

However, if you sweat too much during a long run, you can drink a small amount while running.

You can drink water after running, but don't believe the rumor that you can't drink water after running. It means that you can't drink water immediately after strenuous exercise. Doing so may cause great harm and is also very bad for the stomach and intestines. Running itself is a strenuous exercise. If you drink water immediately at this time, it will not only be useless, but may cause a stroke or other phenomena.
