In a study at Virginia Tech in the United States, 48 ​​obese middle-aged and elderly people aged 55 to 75 were divided into two groups. The first group ate a low-fat, low-calorie food every day and did not drink water before meals; the second group ate the same food as the first group, but drank two glasses of water before each of the three meals a day, with a capacity of 226 ml for each glass.

After 3 months, the obese middle-aged and elderly people who drank two glasses of water before three meals lost an average of about 7,000 grams, while those who did not drink water before meals lost an average of about 5,000 grams. The former lost about 2,000 grams more than the latter.

Another study showed that women who drank more than 1 liter of water a day within a safe range lost more weight than those who drank less than 1 liter.

It is not yet clear how drinking water helps people lose weight. Professor Brenda David of Virginia Tech said this may be related to the fact that drinking water before meals can easily make you feel full. "It may have led to people eating fewer calories," she told Reuters.

Rebecca Muckelbauer, a nutritionist at the Charité University Medical Center in Berlin and the leader of the study, agreed with David's analysis and suggested that "drinking water may also help with weight loss because it increases the body's energy expenditure, but there is not much research on this aspect."

Myth: The more water you drink, the better. The more water you drink, the easier it is to lose weight.

Ensuring that the necessary water is replenished every day is of great significance to maintaining the normal physiological functions of the body. Generally speaking, for every calorie of food the human body consumes, it needs to consume 1 ml of water to maintain metabolic balance. The human body generally needs to consume at least 2500 ml of water every day, but this water is not all the water we normally drink. In addition to drinking water, the remaining water needs to be taken in from food in your daily diet, such as vegetables (90% water content), fruits (80% water content), and meat and fish also contain 70% water. From another perspective, a balanced diet is important during weight loss. Although water can help you lose weight, you should avoid drinking water without eating every day to lose weight. The more water you drink, the better. Drinking too much water will not help you lose weight, but will harm you instead.

If you drink water without restraint, you may get the so-called "water poisoning" and develop pseudo-obesity. Because drinking too much water is harmful to your health. Excessive water causes the body's blood circulation to be blocked, so that the substances needed by the body cannot be delivered to the body's cells in time. As a result, metabolism will slow down and weaken, and natural energy consumption will be hindered, and fat decomposition metabolism will also be reduced. So how can you lose weight?
